Budapest Locals

A day in the city

The Idea

It’s been a tradition for a while that as the Christmas season is approaching, we in Budapest Locals attempt to pass on something from our luck and blessings through small acts of charity. In 2018, we were looking for ways to ‘personalise’, or better to say, make our charity-doing a bit more personal; as sure the kids in the children’s homes we usually reach out to are happy when they unwrap a long-awaited present we got for them, but where is the connection between us in that? So, as usual, Anita had an idea: to give them something different, something that lasts – a memory, an experience. And what could be a more perfect Christmas treat than spending…

Budapest locals at Margaret Island

Let’s go to the green!

Where do the Locals go in Budapest if they want to feel far away from the bustle of city life and escape the concrete jungle? They spend a couple of hours on Margaret Island, a green oasis and Budapest’s gem, effectively closed to private vehicles. So we did the same to enjoy one of the last days of summer. Our first stop was the Japanese Garden located at the northern end of the island, close to the Árpád Bridge. Winding paths, foot bridges, water lilies, little ducks and terrapins in the warm water make the place really charming and a perfect place to hide from the world.

If you would like to escape from the heat of the city, breath some nice fresh air and be in the green, Budapest is a perfect destination for all these, too.
So on a hot summer day we waved goodbye to the city and went to the hills. Of the many hills on the Buda side we chose the highest point, the János Hill. After a 15 minutes ride from the centre we took the scenic, 1km-long ride of the Chairlift (Libegő in Hungarian) to get to the top of the hill, which at 527 metres is the highest point within the city limits.

Odds and ends

March is the month of junk clearance in many districts in Budapest. It practically means that the streets get filled with dead and broke (or not) furniture and electronics.
And what is junk for one can be a treasure for another, and that’s why flea markets are so popular.
On a sunny Sunday morning we decided to check out the biggest flea market in Budapest which is actually one of the biggest in the whole of Central Europe. (Be aware that Hungarians prefer themselves and their country to be referred to as Central Europeans rather than Eastern Europeans:)
Odds and ends1The market is pretty far from the city center, so you need to take…

Ice Ice Baby

February… freezing cold outside and this winter seems so endless…
Let us cheer you up with the number one winter mass sport of Budapest: let’s go iceskating!
If you would happen to visit Hungary one of the first things you’ll notice is that we don’t have really high hills. The highest point of the country is Kékes in the Mátra Mountains northeast of Budapest rising 1014 meters or 3327 ft. That’s not so high, is it? Year by year – due to the global warming or who knows the behind reason – we have less and less snow .
Oh, those white Christmases of my childhood seems to be gone forever… Well, what shall we do…
